Our Adoption Process:
It is the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland’s policy to attempt to place each of our rescued animals in a home that is well- suited to their needs. Once an animal is placed from our rescue, the animal cannot be sold, given away or otherwise transferred. If the adopter is, at any time, unable to keep or continue to maintain the animal for any reason, the animal must be returned to the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland. We work hard at matching our animals to adopters, so they may end their search for a loving, permanent home. Temperament, special needs and personality are all factors in our placements. Please be aware that adoptions are not completed on a first come basis, but rather by striving to find the best suited match for our animal’s needs. Completing an application does not put a hold on an animal. Our Adoption Team will continue working all applications to find the best-suited match. Our goal is always to find the perfect match as quickly as possible.
The Adoption Application
The initial step in our adoption process is the Adoption Application. This can either be done online or in person. The Adoption Application must be filled out completely including vet references and two personal non-family references. Your application will be reviewed and your references will be contacted. We contact your veterinarian to ensure that your current or deceased pets were properly taken care of---this means being current on all vaccinations and spayed or neutered. In order to speed up the process, please contact your veterinarian and let them know to expect our call.
The Home Visit
If the applicant and family have not been to the sanctuary and met their dog of choice they must do so prior to the home visit. If all goes well with the application verification, we will schedule a home visit. A home visit is required to ensure that your home is agreeable for a senior dog and meets their needs. It needs to be a suitable safe environment for your new pet. All pets and family members should be home at this time. The home visit will give our team member an opportunity to learn more specifics about you, your family, your pets and the type of dog you are seeking. At this time, we may suggest that you consider a different dog than applied for. One that we may feel is more acceptable for your home and family situation.
Meeting Your Potential Adoptee
Once a decision is made to place a dog with you, arrangements will be made for a team member to bring the dog to your home to meet all occupants of the home, including other animals.
Finalizing The Adoption
To finalize the adoption you will need to sign a contract, which details expectations in regards to the care, health, and safety of the dog. Though we do not have an adoption fee, we would like to encourage you to make a tax-deductible donation to the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland for any amount you deem appropriate. Thank you!
