The Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland is happy to announce the launch of our new Book Buddies program. This program is modeled after other successful shelter's programs, inviting children to read aloud to our senior pups.
Reading to dogs provides comfort and lowers anxiety levels of kennel life. Children benefit as well by increasing reading skills, positive interactions with the dogs, and nurturing empathy in our future dog lovers.
Participating children will be given a brief overview of what they can expect inside the dog room, some simple rules and a discussion about recognizing behavior signs of dogs (afraid, happy, etc.). Each child will choose a book from our own library and will receive a small mat to sit on while inside the dog room. Then the fun begins as we watch the positive interactions between caring children and the senior dogs who just want someone to love. What age child can attend the reading session?
Children as young as 5 years old can attend the reading session with their parent(s).When and where are the reading sessions held?
